Empty Homes

For the past two years the residents of Sovetski have slowly been relocating from the neighborhood after either accepting paid compensation from the government, or being forced out by the police. The slow pace of the neighborhood's relocation combined with an erratic construction schedule meant homes could sit empty for months or years at a time among otherwise occupied streets.

Over time these homes would be picked clean, first of furniture and other valuables, then of wires, wood floors, doors, and windows. Some were used as shelter by stray dogs and cats, others lit up at night as young men gathered to talk, drink, and smoke. In all of them you could find reminders of the previous owners. Out of reach photos on the walls, cassette tapes dropped in the move, empty bottles on the window sill.
