mehelle tour: sovetski's early history

Mehelle is a project from Ajam Media Collective dedicated to preserving the sights, sounds, and memories of rapidly-changing neighborhoods. Utilizing a combination of 360 degree video with traditional documentary photography and film on an interactive map, Mehelle serves as a resource for local inhabitants, community organizers, and urban researchers long after such neighborhoods have been demolished, gentrified, or transformed by private and state-led construction projects. Our first map is focused on Sovetski, a neighborhood in the heart of Baku, Azerbaijan.

This is a test version of a Mehelle Tour.

how do tours work?

Tours offer a more focused and linear look at our material that can serve as an inroad to our larger collection.

Each tour is built around a narrative theme and made up of a series of connected points on the map with a short documentary, reflective essay, or photo collection attached.

Below each central point is a collection of 'branches'. These are other points on the map that touch on the topics explored in that central point. If a particular image or topic in a central point catches your interest, you can explore it further through a branch before returning to the main tour.

This tour serves as a guide through Sovetski's early history, how its unique atmosphere developed, and the nostalgia people have for the neighborhood.
